Adding Activities, Relationships and scheduling

Activities are the Fundamental work elements of a project. They are the lowest level of a work breakdown structure(WBS) and as such, are the smallest subdivision of a project that directly concerns the project manager
You can define Following information for an activity
Activity ID and Name
Activity Calendars, Start and Finish Dates
Activity type, duration type, and percent complete type.
WBS element and Activity codes
Constraints
Expenses
Predecessor and successor relationships
Work Products and deliverables
Resource and Roles
Notes and Feedback

Steps
To Add Activities, Click on Activities in the Home page or Project>Activities
Organize Layout based on WBS & SORT by Activity ID
Add Activities to respective WBS Level by clicking on ADD on command Bar button

There are 6 types of Activity Types
 1.Task Dependent –> In a fixed duration
This is the default activity type in P6.
 2.Resource Dependent
 3.Level of Effort
 4.Start Milestone
 5.Finish Milestone
 6.WBS summary

Activity Steps

Steps allow you to break activities into smaller units and track the completion of those units.

Activity % Complete type

The way in which the percent complete for the selected activity is determined

There are 3 types in this
Duration Type
Physical Type
Units Type

Relationships

A Relationship defines how a Activity relates to the start or finish of another activity. These Relationships form a logic to your project and are used together for determining Schedule dates.

 Relationship Types

Finish to Start (Default)
Finish to Finish
Start to Start
Start to Finish
How to Assign Relationships?

Select an Activity and select its successor from “successor” tab in the activity detail form

Activity details can be enabled from the list of tool bars shown on the top of the layout.

Assigning Calendars and Activity codes

  • To Assign Calendars/activity code select the activity and enable activity details
  • In Activity details click  on General/Codes Tab
  • Click on Assign and select the respective calendar/codes.

Scheduling

Scheduling can be done in two ways
When you choose the schedule command or each time you make a change that affect schedule dates.
The Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling technique is used to calculate project schedules. CPM uses activity durations and relationships between activities to calculate the project schedule
How to Schedule?
To Schedule the project press F9 key.

Select the data date and click on schedule command
P6 Schedules the project on CPM and Critical path activities will be displaced in red color
P6 Calculates early dates during Forward pass and Late Dates during Backward pass Calculation.
Difference between Late Finish and Early Finish is termed as
 Total Float
Activities with Zero total Float are called as Critical Activities
