Thermometer chart can be used for displaying the percentage progress, it can be used for better visualization in the dashboards.

This is the sample chart that I have already developed. Let us get into the tutorial now to learn how to create a thermometer chart in Excel.

In this example, let us consider that we have Plan vs Actuals for 10 people,

and let us calculate the total of the achievement and then % achievement, so we have got 70% achievement out of 100%.

• Select the cell C16, go to insert tab, go to charts section and click on insert column chart and select 2D column chart.

• Delete the chart title and X-axis.

• Right click on the bar, select format data series and under series options, set the series overlap to 0% and gap width to 100%

• Right click on the vertical axis, format axis and set the minimum value to 0 and maximum to 1 and close.

• Adjust the width and height of the chart to look like a thermometer shape

• Go to insert tab and insert a oval shape, format the shape and insert in the graph at the tip of the bar and adjust accordingly.

• Right click on vertical axis and click on Add Minor grid-lines

• To change the grid lines, select the grid-lines, right click and select format grid-lines, select the dash type in the tab of fill and line.

• Choose a good color, you may try the gradient fill to add the visual impact

This is what it looks like a final output.

This way you can depict the % progress in view of thermometer chart in Excel.
