How To Remove Redundant Relationships In Primavera P6 || Detect Redundant Relationships and Delete

One of our subscribers has asked me to explain how to remove redundant relationships in Primavera P6 Schedule.

So friends, I will be explaining in detail in this video tutorial. This is a sample simple project with 3 activities A,B,C.

Here Activity B's predecessor is A and Activity C's predecessor is B and as well Activity A. Actually A is not exactly required.

Because A is followed by B and B is followed by C, so indirectly A is linked with C So here, Activity relationship between A and C is redundant relationship.

Now, let us see how we remove this redundant relationship.

First, let us export this schedule from P6 to Excel. Follow the steps like this

1. Go to file, click on Export

2. In Export Format, select Spreadsheet-XLSX format and click next.

3. In Export Type dialog box, select Activity Relationships, Click Next

4. In Project to Exports dialog box, select the project by ticking the checkbox , click Next.

5. Select a template in the select template dialog box and click modify and select the columns like this as shown here, click ok and Click Next.

6. Select the folder to export, click Next, and finally

7. click finish. Now go to desktop and open the excel file.

8. In column K, the third relationship is the redundant one as we discussed, now we need to delete this row by entering D here in the third relationship.

9. If we have got more number of activities, we need to enter a generic formula to identify all redundant relationships

10. In cell K3, enter formula as shown and press enter and then drag this formula to the last cell in the same column to apply the formula

11. you will get D in the last cell as it is a redundant relationship

12. Save the excel file and close it.

13. Now import this file into p6.

14. click File, click on Import

15. Select Spreadsheet in the Import Format, click Next.

16. Select File to import, click open and Click Next

17. Select Import type as "Activity Relationships", click Next

18. In Import project options, click under import to, select the project

19. Click Finish and Close.

20. You can observe that the relationship between A and C has been removed in the Gantt chart and same you can observe in the details as well.

But friends, remember, you should be removing the redundant relationships only if you are sure that someday these relationships doesn't become driving relationships.

Just because they are redundant now, doesn't mean that they will not become driving as the project progresses.

Today's non-driving relationship may become the critical path in future.

So, I recommend not to remove redundant relationships in Primavera P6, rather than regretting in the later stage on the decision of removing redundant relationships.

Good luck friends.
