Primavera P6 Tutorial : Chapter 1: Introduction

What is Project Management?

Project Management is application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project tasks in order to meet stakeholder expectations. This involves managing of Scope, Time, Cost and Quality

Project Management processes can be organized into 5 stages as mentioned below:

  1. Initiation: Recognizing that a project should begin.
  2. Planning: Developing and maintaining a workable scheme to accomplish the business need.
  3. Execution: Coordinating people and other resources to carry out the execution plan
  4. Controlling: Ensuring that the project objectives are met by regular monitoring and measuring progress and taking mitigation plans whenever required.
  5. Closing: Formalizing Handover and Takeover processes to bring an orderly end.

Oracle Primavera P6 is an Integrated Project Portfolio management solution to satisfy each team member's needs, responsibilities and skills. Primavera includes following software components
  1. Project Management (PM) Module enabling users to track and analyse performance.. This module is ideal for managing multiple projects supporting multi user access across entire organization.
  2. Methodology Management (MM) Module is a system for authoring and storing methodologies or project plan templates in a central database.So, Project managers can select,combine and tailor methodologies to create new custom project plans.
  3. Other components include: Progress Reporter which is a web based interproject communication and timekeeping system; P6 Web Access, which provides browser based access to project, portfolio and resource data and there are many plug-ins available.

In this tutorial, let us learn how to Color WBS levels after Primavera P6 Export To Excel. After exporting activity table from Primavera P6 to Excel, it’s very hard to tell which activity belong to which WBS. So in this tutorial, let us see how to color WBS levels automatically so we can have a report like in Primavera P6. This is my sample schedule in primavera, 1. Apart from the in-built fields available in primavera, you can create User-defined fields which enable you to customize fields and values and add them to the project database. For example, you can use them to track additional activity data such as ordered dates, delivery dates, revised budgets, purchase order / work order numbers, vendor names, etc. In this chapter, let us learn how to create User defined fields, how to work with them and how to work with indicators type of User defined fields. How to Create UDFs? For each custom user defined field you create, you can specify any of the following data formats for that field: Text, Start Date, Finish Date, Cost, Integer, Number, Text, and Indicator.
